How-To: Stream Video/Music from your Mac/PC to your BlackBerry PlayBook

By Ray Nicolini
Via www.BlackBerryOS.com

Orb- stream media from your PC/Mac to your web enabled device, in this case the Blackberry Playbook. Once you set up Orb, you will be able to view all of your media on your Playbook, now matter where you are, as long as you have a WiFi connection. The great thing about Orb is that it cost your nothing. Watch the, "How To" video and Download Orb for your computer. Next, pick up the Orb Launcher from the Blackberry App World. I have been testing this for a few days and the only issue I have come up with, is the font, which is discussed in the video. Be sure to let us know how Orb works for you!

Review: DODOcase for BlackBerry Playbook; Handmade hard case protects with style

DODOcase PlayBook blue detail Review: DODOcase for BlackBerry PlayBook; Handmade hard case protects with style
When our DODOcase for the BlackBerry PlayBook arrived, one of the first things we wondered was “Why the name DODOcase?”. A quick trip to the DODOcase site gave us an answer. As the digital age sees a steady drop in printed literature, traditional bookbinding techniques are becoming more obsolete. In a twist of fate these traditional bookbinding arts are being preserved and even revived in the book’s latest  manifestation. The logo is a bittersweet reminder of the flightless Mauritian Dodo bird that was hunted to extinction in 1681.

Functional and well made, the DODOcase discreetly protected our PlayBook with old school flare. With a design inspired by Moleskine journals, we think that men and women alike will appreciate the clean, no frills aesthetics. The hardcover feels durable and impact resistant, without being overly rugged. Rubberized grips ensure a snug fit in the carved bamboo tablet cradle, which features access to all ports and buttons. Just don’t plan on using your rear-facing camera without a bit of prying on your PlayBook, as there is no camera hole.
Moroccan cloth binds the black cover, but it’s your choice of a black, blue, green, or grey interior. An elastic band seals the deal. The case was easy to clean with the quick wipe of a dry cloth on the faux leather to clean through coffee drips, grimy fingers and a dirty purse.

In a world driven by technology, DODOcase is a nice reality check. Not to mention, simplicity will always be in style. In our first week of review, this already award winning case has come through with flying colors. Needless to say, the future of DODOcase is a bright one as they now put the ‘book’ in PlayBook. Case closed.

Is That an IPad in Your Pocket, Or Are You Just Happy to See Me?

By Ray Nicolini

Is That an IPad in Your Pocket, Or Are You Just Happy to See Me?

Apple's slimmer and lighter iPad 2 can be pocket-sized... if you have the right pockets.

Testers at the Tactical Pants Blog, while confirming the Web's insanely long tail, recently tried to cram the iPad 2 into nine pairs of "tactical pants," or cargo pants with multitudinous and ridiculously large pockets, in a quest to find the best pair of pants to carry the tablet.
The conclusion: yes, the iPad 2 is technically pocket-sized, but you're better off carrying the tablet in a case if you want to move comfortably, sit down or not look pretty freaky.
The best fit was Blackhawk's recently-discontinued Warrior Wear Pants. The blog's tester was able to "comfortably glide across the office with the iPad 2 at his side," though even with this relatively good fit, sitting was deemed to involve "issues."
The worst fit, aside from not fitting at all, came from Genuine Gear's tactical pants, which accepted the tablet but left it precariously prone to slipping out. The reviewer's conlcusion: "Convenient, yes. But truly practical? Not exactly."
Six pairs of pants, clearly unworthy of their "tactical" designation, didn't accept the iPad at all.
Since Steve Jobs has proclaimed his disdain for 7-inch tablets, it seems like a good pair of tactical pants is as close as anyone will get to a pocketable iPad.
It's unfortunate that the current batch of tactical pants all leave something to be desired in the iPad-toting department, but with luck, a tactical pants designer is reading this right now and identifying a market opportunity.
For the man with more refined tastes, you can order a custom-made suit with iPad pockets.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 1.0.3 Features – BBM, Video Chat, Bridge Document editing, Home screen shortcuts

By Ray Nicolini

Via pocketberry.com

As you all know, BlackBerry PlayBook OS v1.0.3 was officially announced this morning at BlackBerry World, and we were also told that the OS would be available as soon as tonight, rolling out to everyone by tomorrow.  RIM put up a post covering what OS 1.0.3 for the PlayBook has, going in depth of BBM, Video Chat, document edition via Bridge, and having home screen shortcuts.  Continue reading to check it all out.
BlackBerry PlayBook Video Chat
The Video Chat application enables video and voice over Wi-Fi calling between BlackBerry PlayBook tablets in peer-to-peer or enterprise environments using your BlackBerry® ID profile. Here are some of the features I’m really excited about:
  • One-Click Calls – With just one click you can make a call from your Video Chat contact list, log of recent calls or simply by entering the BlackBerry ID email address of the person you want to call.
  • Incoming Call Notifications – You will receive a notification pop-up when a new video call comes in, allowing you to accept the call as either a video or voice call, or decline the call. For those quiet moments — such as when you’re watching a movie, playing a game or listening to music — you will also have the ability to simply set the “Do Not Disturb” option and the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will automatically ignore all incoming calls.
  • Powerful In-Call Functions – By using the picture-in-picture function you can easily preview what your camera is seeing prior to placing the call to see the video feed you will be sending. You can also easily switch cameras from front to rear so your friends can see what you see, and for private moments you can mute/unmute audio or make or take calls using voice only.
  • Friends List – BlackBerry PlayBook Video Chat comes complete with a Friends List for maintaining your contacts. A friendly name and a picture can easily be added to a contact to personalize the entry and a Call Log makes it simple to keep track of who called, as well as when and what calls were missed. Friends are added using their BlackBerry ID profile.
  • Video Chat Multitasking – Thanks to the power of the BlackBerry Tablet OS and its true multitasking capabilities, video and voice over Wi-Fi chats can continue running in the background while you interact with other applications.
  • HDMI Video Chat – In addition to chatting using the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet’s high-resolution screen, Video Chat supports HDMI output when in ‘Mirror Mode’, allowing you to output what is on your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet’s screen to a larger HD television or monitor.
BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™) Support via BlackBerry Bridge
BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.0.3 expands the BlackBerry Bridge experience to include BBM (woot! Ed.). BlackBerry smartphone users with BlackBerry Bridge enabled can now mirror their smartphone BBM on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet’s large high-resolution display over a secure Bluetooth® connection. BBM via BlackBerry Bridge features:
• Full BBM Chat Functionality – Either one-to-one or multi-person chats.
• BBM Status Updates – Let your friends know how you feel about your new BlackBerry PlayBook tablet!
• Photo Sharing – Via the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet or your BlackBerry smartphone SD card.
• BBM Alerts – New BlackBerry Messenger alerts will appear on the BlackBerry PlayBook notification ribbon.
Document Editing via BlackBerry Bridge
In addition to BBM, BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.0.3 now adds document-editing support via BlackBerry Bridge to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. This means that documents sitting on your BlackBerry smartphone can now be accessed via secure Bluetooth connection, edited on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet’s large high-resolution display and then saved back to your BlackBerry smartphone. Here are some important aspects of document editing via BlackBerry Bridge to note:
  • File Access – Access to your pictures, documents, spreadsheets and slideshows via either email over BlackBerry Bridge or the BlackBerry Bridge files application. With BlackBerry Bridge, you can view photos and office documents and edit spreadsheets and text-based documents.
  • BlackBerry® Internet Service Support – When bridged to a BlackBerry smartphone with a BIS service plan, users can select to either save their document locally on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet or back onto their BlackBerry smartphone SD card.
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server Support – When bridged to a BlackBerry smartphone operating on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, documents automatically get saved back to the BlackBerry smartphone SD card to help ensure corporate data is kept secure.
Home Screen Browser Bookmarks
Users can now quickly save a BlackBerry PlayBook Browser bookmark to the PlayBook tablet home screen for easy access. Select the browser bookmark from the home screen, and the BlackBerry PlayBook browser will automatically launch the webpage you want to see!

BlackBerry 7 browser performance is faster than the iPhone, Android

By Ray Nicolini

via Mobilesyrup.com

RIM officially announced the BlackBerry 7 OS today and during the presentation this morning at BlackBerry World I snapped a pic of the browser experience we can eventually expect. RIM points out their competition will lag behind them, in this case the iPhone 4, Nexus One and Nexus S. The slide shows that BlackBerry 7 OS is “now one of the elite browsers in mobile today” with the capacity to load pages 1.6 times faster than OS 6. RIM also reveals that an average web page on the 9900 loads in 7.81 seconds and the Torch falls way behind and loads in a long 12.4 seconds. In addition, RIM has verified stats by SunSpider (JavaScript benchmark test) that reveals the 9900executes in 2.84 seconds, the iPhone comes in second at 3.23, while both Android devices come are over 5 seconds. Finally, last place is the Torch 9800 with a very long 10.8 seconds. It’s not known what web page was loaded.
When we had the hands on time with 9900 the browser did render pages incredibly quickly with no lag time.
